The CSS WG published the first version of a new module for CSS3, called
CSS3 Advanced Layout Module
http://www.w3.org/TR/2005/WD-css3-layout-20051215
It defines a way to lay out the descendants of an element in a grid-like
template defined by that element. It's a bit like a cross between
tables (for alignment) and absolute positioning (to be independent of
the source order).
It's in the early stages, and it also contains other proposals (stacks
of cards, varying elasticity of boxes), that are even less developed.
We're not even sure if this will remain a module or whether the contents
will be integrated into other modules. Some of it may go to the Tables
module or the Absolute Positioning module.
As always, feedback is very welcome. The preferred way is e-mail to this
mailing list, with "[css-layout]" in the subject line, as on this
message.
