This is almost certainly as a result of discrimination against early versions of IE by sites that looked specifically for the early Netscape Navigator. A common question on the lynx mailing list used to be what is the recommended user agent string to spoof to maximise your chances of sites being prepared to talk to you. (Lynx is one of the few browsers whose compile time default user agent string does correctly follow the HTTP standards.)
