A 72pt font should ALWAYS be 1" (2.54cm) high, whether it's printed on paper or displayed on a CRT or LCD. If it's not, then either your OS is broken (CSS cannot fix a broken OS) or your system is badly misconfigured and needs to be [re]adjusted.
And yes, default settings are often "bad".

A point is a PHYSICAL measurement; it is only /mapped/ to pixels, not defined by them.

You can't argue with math. :)
