From the EPISTLE Core Model point of view ( http://www.epistle.ws )this may be described by
more deep ground.
A "thing" Person Instantination Type is Class
John Doe is a member of a class Person
John Doe Instantination Type is Individual
(A mamber of a Class may be a Class too)
Although a situation is more complex keeping in mind that "John Doe"
it is mearly a name and there could be many persons with such name !

Best regards,
 Leonid
