Encoding metadata for distributed resources using rdf

I am currently  onvolved in developing an application
which provides a mediated schema over a set of
distributed heterogeneous data

bases and query language for this schema.
The schema holds information on

1. data sources 
2. tables in data sources
3.data types
4.operators available for queries

All these are distributed resources. Therefore I
thought of using 
RDF to encode the metadata in the mediated schema.

What do u think about this? and what are the pros and
cons of this approach?
What is the advantage I will gain by using RDF instead
of XML, with regard 
to this application.
