W3C Semantic Web Activity: http://www.w3.org/2001/sw/

RDF IG,

	From http://www.w3.org/
	9 February 2001:
W3C is pleased to announce the launch of the Semantic Web Activity.

The Semantic Web is a vision: the idea of data on the Web defined and
linked in a way that it can be used by machines for automation,
integration and reuse. The Web can reach its full potential only if it
becomes a place where data can be shared and processed by automated
tools as well as by people. Learn more in the Semantic Web Activity
	statement.

See http://www.w3.org/2001/sw/ for the W3C Semantic Web Activity Statement
(http://www.w3.org/2001/sw/Activity) and information about the first SW
Working Group, "RDF Core", which will take on the task of stabilising the
basic RDF model, schema and syntax specs as a foundation for future SW
developments.

In particular, with the SW launch we say welcome aboard to Eric Miller,
longtime RDF evangelist, who joins W3C as Activity Lead for the Semantic
Web initiative. Also we owe thanks to Brian McBride (HP Labs), whose excellent
work on RDF issue tracking has led us to rope him into co-chairing the
new RDF Core Working Group. I'm personally thrilled to see this Activity
launched, and to get to work more closely with Eric, Brian, and of course the
members of the RDF lists, on making this Semantic Web thing happen.
I think it's going to be a fun (and rather busy) year :-)

So, more on all this shortly. Just wanted to send a quick heads-up in
advance of details and formalities to follow...

Dan
