Jeff, I just noticed a typo in my message. In the 4th paragraph, starting "First, an observation.", the third sentence should begin as follows: "The most extreme non-layered theory yet developed is probably Aczel's non-well-founded set theory, in which layering restrictions are provably inconsistent; and it has been shown that..." Sorry about that. I hope this makes the intended meaning clearer.
