To Whom, My comment is short and to the point. As an independent open source developer/consultant I would be personally liable for any patent problems. If this policy goes through, I will simply cease to develop any tools or libraries that have any WWW connections. I don't have the time or ability to do both the legal and technical work required. I find it very sad and very worrying that we have arrived here on the back of the fact that TBL gave all his work away for free. It strikes me as totally against the spirit of his initial efforts. It also ignores the fact that the freedom of developers to create code that people would find useful, moved the web from an academic plaything to a major world force. If it had been shackled in this way from the beginning, we would not be having this discussion, as the web would be irrelevant.
