To whom it may concern,
I strongly object to the proposal of patenting CCS and XML.
The internet has grown mainly and distinctly through OPEN SOURCE and
should remain so. Losing sight of this can only spell disaster as
the net has it's foundation and growth based on the principle "you
take from the net - you give to the net".
Limiting the resources available to the growing millions of people
using the net will only mean that alternate non-limiting resources
will grow instead. Disaster indeed - especially as some
corporations, typically Microsoft, have already tried to modify
standards to lock and limit people into buying their own technology
and so the creation of even more "standards".
It will also mean that the technology you wish to patent will be
boycotted by the majority as the world economy is not driven mainly
by big business but mainly by small business. The bottom line is
cost after all.
The W3C is clearly losing its focus, is over balanced with
corporation membership, is mainly guided by short-sighted corporation
interests and has become unrealistic.
Hence, the W3C should be disbanded and a more comprehensive body
representing ALL interests formed.
This proposal closely resembles Microsoft's attempt to hijack the web
with its "smart tags technology" (now classified as "scumware"
amongst many net communities). As a result, growing numbers of IT
professionals are now recommending and moving clients to alternate
browsers, email clients, OSs and server technology - myself included.
The growth of these alternate technologies to counteract Microsoft's
attempts to monopolise the net should be a clear indication of what
will happen if you attempt to implement your proposal.
Yours sincerely,
Ken Guntar
