Free interoperability between the work of different vendors (including those who do not work for profit) has created the Web. If the TCP/IP suite had been encumbered by patents, the Internet (as we now know it) would be in as poor shape as the original vision of MSN. Knowledge belongs to us all. Patents are a very philosophically dubious construction at the best of times. I have argued against them in other fora, and will continue to do so. In this case, the usefulness of interoperability far outweighs any commercial interests. Do not pander to the profit mongers!
