I think they've helped me understand the situation. Is there somewhere that I can view the latest version, please? I "don't have permission to access /~dpc/draft-spec/" on http://monet.nag.co.uk/ As someone working from the point of view of implementing the renderer, I struggled with these sections because they don't specifically state the "right" behavior. However, I think I just need to accept that the "right" behavior is not completely specified. IMO, it would be best if MathML were as specific as possible (and maybe it is for now). I understand though that this is a not an easy issue to completely specify the "right" behavior in all situations. I also wonder whether some may have pushed for the spec to change because existing implementations do not follow the old spec. That on its own is not a good enough reason to change the spec IMO, so I hope that is not the reason. As long as it is made clear that authors cannot expect any specific behavior when there is no one "right" behavior, then I think we are at a reasonable point in the process of continual improvement. Karl.
