Re: Request to review the Semantic Sensor Network Ontology

Not in SSN directly, because for cases you want to indicate the unit of measurement we have the qualified sosa:hasResult relation. However, you could use the DataCube vocabulary to group simple results together and describe the Unit of Measure of the dimension using the sosa:Result class.

So what I am trying to say is, we recommend, of course, the use of the sosa:hasResult relation and all of our examples http://w3c.github.io/sdw/ssn/#examples show how to do that, but there may be cases where the modellers are concerned about the payload size. One of our requirements was to allow the modelling of dynamic sensor data https://www.w3.org/TR/sdw-ucr/#DynamicSensorData in an IoT context where size matters.

    OK, that makes sense, Armin.

If typing the data for every result is inefficient, is there a sane way
to indicate that the sosa:Sensor always reports its results in a given
unit, and then make the range of sosa:hasSimpleResult xsd:float?

We included the sosa:hasSimpleResult property, among other reasons, for IoT use cases where the size of the annotations matter, i.e. if you use the ontology for runtime sensing applications where you have potentially millions of observations from a sensor and you would want to keep the payload minimal.

However, datatyping is not explicitly encouraged by the spec for the time being, and one of the examples in the spec currently uses a string without any datatype. This is being discussed in:

The Spatial Data on the Web Working Group is tight on schedule as it needs to finish its work by the end of June. Let us know if there's anything we can do to speed up the review. I went through the self-review checklist but did not see anything that directly applies to this specification.
