It is clear that the Greek prefix "tele" ("afar", "at a distance") is
part of many words. But the abbreviation "tel" is mostly used to mean
"telephone" (or telefone); in any case better than "phone".
I cannot think of something better. The other than I can think of are
worse; for example, "vox" for voice telephone that would be "Latin
centric".
