Has it been considered to allow the AREA element wherever IMG is permitted (outside the contentx of a MAP), and to permit CSS styling of the element? With script, this would allow the creation of simple, useful polygon animations as well as simple illustrations. An analog clock would be an example of such a simple animation. With AREA, it's not a simple matter of changing CSS visibility or display as it is with other HTML elements, because a visible AREA isn't generally drawn, but is "visible" for purpose of focus..
