I wanted to mention that despite my partially facetious message earlier, www.w3.org really is the best place to learn about XML. They have links to other resources, specs, essays and so forth. They also have XML in its proper context: as part of the (forthcoming) architecture of the World Wide Web. Those who want to understand where the Web is going would be interested, just as they would have been interested in stylesheets a couple of years ago before they were as hyped as they are today.
