Re: scientific literature on color contrast

Hi Tobias,

I hope you are doing well.

While I do not have specific paper recommendations to share, I wanted to
provide some personal perspective on the first topic you mentioned
regarding the impact of lighting conditions on lightness perception.

As someone with 100% vision impairment who still retains light perception,
I can confirm that lighting plays a vital role in how I navigate and
identify my surroundings. When there is proper lighting, such as bright
sunlight or strong indoor light, I am often able to get a working idea of
an object’s identity. For example, I can perceive high-contrast items like
a white car much more easily than dark or dull-colored objects, which
become very difficult to identify when the lighting is poor.

I also believe that perception is heavily influenced by how an individual
is taught to interpret their environment. In my experience, building a
mental image is just as important as light perception itself. I have found
it incredibly helpful when others validate or help refine my guesses—for
instance, by letting me feel an object I have identified as a car. This
physical confirmation, combined with light perception, helps create a
reliable mental image that makes future identifications more accurate.

I hope these observations are useful for your research.

Best regards,

Udit Pandey
