Re: Success Criteria 2.1.4 Question

Thank you Patrick, for your explanation.

I am restarting the thread because it got interrupted by an unrelated issue.

I have a couple more questions about single-key and character key shortcuts and focus:

1. Is it only single-key character key shortcuts that require focus for activation in order to pass?

2. Do paired character-key shortcuts (e.g., pressing and holding one character key while pressing a second character key) also fail if the combination can be activated without focus?

For example, the simulation, Projectile Data Lab <https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/projectile-data-lab/latest/projectile-data-lab_all.html>) used a visual metaphor of a soccer field to represent different sets of data. The data points are projectiles that have been launched onto the field. There are series of fields (i.e., numbered radio buttons) that when selected activate or make visual the filed of launched projectiles.

A two-key shortcut F + 1 tough 6. Pressing and holding the F-key while simultaneously pressing a number key allows a learner to easily compare the projectiles launched onto Field 3 with the projectiles launched on to Field 6 while keeping their keyboard focus on other useful interactive components, such as the Launch button.

Does this 2-key shortcut fail if it cannot be turned off or remapped?

The intent of SC 2.1.4 seems to be written/designed to prevent accidental fires that can be catastrophic to the user experience - that makes sense. In our case switching fields accidentally is not a catastrophic event.

I would very much appreciate a little more help me with my questions above, so I can assess the urgency of developing additional mechanisms (mechanisms to globally disable or remap a sims key shortcuts). Both seem quite useful for the future, but not immediately necessary for our case.

Most respectfully,
Taliesin
