RE: [EXTERNAL] Question on contrast requirement in ratings(Asterisk) stars *

Hi Kiran,

In terms of WCAG conformance the unfilled star still needs to have a border that has 3:1 contrast with the background color of the component. This is required for any part of a graphical object that is needed to understand the image. Being able to see all the stars is necessary to understand the total possible rating, not just the current rating, so the unfilled star (or any star in the group, for that matter) needs to have 3:1 with the background. The filled and 'unfilled' color have sufficient contrast with each other, so the border on the unfilled star is the issue.

I would put a solid outline around the fifth star, particularly if this is an interactive element where they’re actually selecting the stars, and not a static one conveying the rating.

Hi all,

I appreciate your guidance on the contrast requirement for asterisk in rating stars.

if the rating is 4 out of 5 stars, where the first 4 stars have a contrast ratio of 3:1 however, my question is - does the 5th asterisk also need a contrast of 3:1??

Please help and suggest.

Thank you very much for your time.
