RE: Details/Summary & Video Transcript

Hello,

At epubtest.org we have tested the details element extensively. It really is a wonderful feature in HTML 5 It works great in most places; we tested in EPUB Reading systems and in the browsers.

We found that JAWS has a problem when the details is inside a figure, but outside the figure element, it works fine.

In IE and some older browsers, the details are always expanded, but the content is still displayed.

Of course, I suggest you test, because the expanding details may push other content off screen, I mean it would expand and push other content up. For screen reader users, they would need to focus on the details to read the content, which is what most people would expect to do.

One of the current best practice recommendations is to use the details element for extended (long) descriptions of complex graphics. In this way, the reader can select to expand the description or leave it collapsed.

Best

George

Subject: Details/Summary & Video Transcript

Our videos have closed captioning & transcripts, and I’ve been asked to display the video transcript in a collapsible div directly below the video.

I’m thinking of using details and summary HTML elements to do this: <https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTML/Element/details>

I really like this option as no javascript required and it’s just plain vanilla HTML. But I’m not sure about the accessibility implications. This blog post from 2019 shows there are some NVDA issues, and no IE support. (https://www.hassellinclusion.com/blog/accessible-accordions-part-2-using-details-summary/) I’m okay with no IE support as that’s a small small fraction of our user base, and it shows shows the content *not* collapsed in the div.

Does anyone know if the missing state change issue has been addressed in nvda? This makes it look like perhaps it was fixed: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/8631

Is there any issue too with presenting the video transcript in a collapsed div? It would be labeled as such so a sighted user or someone using a screen reader could open and consume the transcript if they wanted to.

Thanks!

Jeana
