I'll add that one technical way to have sufficient contrast while keeping things light is to use larger text (at least 24px size). Then you're only technically aiming for 3:1 ratio rather than 4.5:1. Couple that with a light font (as WCAG currently doesn't take the font's actual native weight into account), and you can "get away" with relatively light overall appearance (though of course, this edge on gaming the SC's wording, rather than trying to make sure things are nice and clear and visible to users).
