RE: WCAG 2.1 questions

Like I said in my previous email, WCAG standards are not mandatory by law or policy almost anywhere in the world. In the two places where they are mandatory (the UK and the 27 EU countries, but for public sector websites only) the deadline has already passed for websites. The deadline for mobile apps is 23 September 2021. Similar legislation is expected for private sector websites in about 3 years, so you have time to prepare for that.

In the US, federal and federally-funded websites must comply with Section 508 by law. At present, Section 508 mandates conformance with WCAG 2.0 AA (not 2.1) when applied to websites. There is no deadline – all websites that come under this legislation must comply as soon as they launch.

Hi Mitchell,

Thank you for your message and the very useful information.

Actually, we’d like to know the list of country where WCAG standards are mandatory by law or policy, and for each of them, what would be the deadline to apply these standards to avoid penalties ? So that we can present that to our board management and start the compliance plan.

Hopefully you can provide me this list with effective deadlines,

Thank you in advance,

Best regards,

Pierre

Hi Pierre,

I see that Bureau Veritas does business in every continent<https://group.bureauveritas.com/place-locator>, which probably motivates your question about deadline dates in different countries. To over-simplify: The public sector in Europe requires WCAG 2.1, while most of the rest of the world is using WCAG 2.0 moving at different speeds toward 2.1. I recommend you target 2.1 now for all regions and sectors, because it is better for users and fully back-compatible with 2.0.

For a more detailed discussion of 2.0/2.1, regions, and sectors, see this recent Twitter thread: https://twitter.com/mgifford/status/1308405556667875330?s=19<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/twitter.com/mgifford/status/1308405556667875330?s=19__;!!NslPjgbbnDqexg!dVr-vh8xWIa-nVFyK4mXNDwce7Dy1kJBBe9r1ZutrZSjC3wMc4Jt-2ftj1vhXwTiB0mbEqLcTrR9$>

Update: An earlier email gave a link to RGAA version 3 2017, which was based on WCAG 2.0. France has moved to RGAA version 4 2019, now based on WCAG 2.1. https://www.numerique.gouv.fr/publications/rgaa-accessibilite/<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.numerique.gouv.fr/publications/rgaa-accessibilite/__;!!NslPjgbbnDqexg!dVr-vh8xWIa-nVFyK4mXNDwce7Dy1kJBBe9r1ZutrZSjC3wMc4Jt-2ftj1vhXwTiB0mbEio97F3o$>

Hi,

I’m Pierre Chmielewksi, working as a webmaster assistant at Bureau Veritas corporate department.
We heard about the WCAG 2.1 standards and wish to comply with them, but we have some questions that are unclear for us, could you help answering theses questions:

  * What is the list of concerned by the WCAG2.1 standards?
  * What are the deadline dates to be compliant with them for each country concerned ?

If you could reply to me as soon as you can so that we can start applying our web accessibility strategy on our websites park all over the world.

Thank you in advance,

Regards
