    If, with borders removed, the table becomes a confusing mess, then I'd
    say non-text contrast 3:1 should be applied. Basically, if the non-text
    "thing" is needed to understand visually what's going on, it should
    follow the ratio.
    
    And saying "it's essential that the border be faint as otherwise it's
    too visually busy" (if I understand what you're trying to get at
    correctly) is not really what the "essential" clause is about.
