Hi, thanks that’s a good suggestion. We did try with the background colours alternating early on but we found it seemed to make things tricky to scan down with the eye (In comparison to the other options). This could be our particular circumstances perhaps. These mails are great – it’s helping me understand a little more as I couldn’t find anything definite for table borders. Basically, if the non-text "thing" is needed to understand visually what's going on, it should follow the ratio. And saying "it's essential that the border be faint as otherwise it's too visually busy" (if I understand what you're trying to get at correctly) is not really what the "essential" clause is about.
