A simpler one for this example might be to insert the line numbers as
separate p elements inbetween the blocks of text
<p>5</p>
<p>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet,... </p>
or use <br /> if preferred for visual presentation.
<p>5 <br /> Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet,... </p>
That presents the information, even if not as pretty as some publishers would like.
I'd like to think CSS could solve the first problem,
but I guess the browser compatibility + scaling is an issue?
