Denise, I mailed the BBC webmaster that the alt tag is not existing. And asked 
for a correction into alt attribute..  Thank you for the URI

When you look in the french google for alt tag (I only choose sites 
francophones) , you can read  that most sites mention alt an attribute of the 
img tag, so the confusion must be a special english slang problem, caused by 
people who don't know exactly what they are talking about.

It is curious that the problem does not appear in searches using French 
Google. I don't think I'll even attempt to speculate on the possible reasons 
for this problem being so prevalent in English sites. It will be interesting 
to see whether the BBC responds to your email. If you followed up on all the 
Web sites referring to "alt tag" you would have a full-time job trying to keep 
up with the workload!
