A wav or a phone call are offered by some, but we need a way I suggest some sort of email varification that would be on the same par with the current method. If you don't have a sound card or if you live somewhere where phoning is a problem, the image is still available. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Steve Carter" <steve@juggler.net> To: "wai-ig list" <w3c-wai-ig@w3.org> Sent: Monday, January 28, 2002 10:48 AM Subject: Re: sign up security: Tis a tricky one, because the aim of the technique is to prove that you are a human, so you have to pick something that a human can do that a machine cannot. The thing that humans are good at is filtering and discerning. Trouble is if they pick something you can't detect, then you might as well be a solid block of lead from the POV of that test. The image is necessarily low contrast and noisy, because the problem of recognising characters is not really a hard one any more, so they've added a filtering dimension too. IMO (come back to me if you disagree) being offered an alternative of listening to a noisy .wav would include a lot more individuals and would be in principle the same test. ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Poehlman" <poehlman1@home.com> To: "wai-ig list" <w3c-wai-ig@w3.org> Sent: Monday, January 28, 2002 3:36 PM Subject: sign up security: > One thing in this area that seems to becoming more popular and that > completely stopps accessibility if you cannot utilize images is the use > of an image that you are directed to transcribe as presented into an > edit box to validate that you are a live human being filling out the > form.
