RE: [External] : Re: Re closing of issues and WG support

Thank you all for suggesting ways to improve our processes.

The chairs are satisfied with the approach we are taking for the silver issues, as this process gives everyone opportunity to review the issues as they are closed and raise concerns if needed. Here is our methodology:

  1. We are reviewing older issues from the silver repository. These are issues that are around 4 years old and written against older content.
  2. Any issue we find that we feel has not been addressed, we leave open and move the issue into the wcag 3 repository. Such issues will be handled through the normal course of wcag 3 business.
  3. Any issue we find that we feel has been addressed or is no longer relevant, we tag for review by the wider working group.
  4. Those members who are comfortable with the judgement of the chairs can express support for closing the issues that the chairs have identified.
  5. Those members who prefer to review specific issues can do so, and express their desire and support for keeping any issue open.
  6. The chairs then move any issues that one or more members wish to keep open to the wcag 3 repository.

This approach provides opportunity for those who wish to rely on chair judgement to do so, as well as opportunity for those who wish to take greater care in scrutinizing issues to identify any that should remain open.

We have had a few members take time to scrutinize the issues and select any issues they desire to keep open, and there has been a handful of issues that have remained open as a result of their evaluation. The chairs appreciate and value both approaches, and feel that this process gives everyone an opportunity to contribute in the manner to which they are most comfortable.

Regards,
Charles Adams

if you mean chairs should be empowered to close issues unilaterally using their own judgement when they feel the issue is closed, without having to bring each item up for WG vote — I would agree.

Yes I do!

I would say however that it would be good to ping the person who brought the issue forward as part of the process though so they are aware that their suggestion had been accepted/modified/rejected.

Good point, yes I'd say that would be good courtesy to do. Possibly GitHub's default behaviour of emailing the issue-opener for each comment (which includes the closing one unless user changed settings) would suffice?
