RE: WCAG-ACTION-341: Write a new definition for "new" for https://www.w3.org/tr/wcag21/#commonpurposes

If multiple concepts drawn from the list can be applicable to a single UI component (and we currently don’t create an expectation either way), then I agree that a combination of “new” and “edit” would serve the purpose here. The metadata format may map this to a single concept or allow specification of multiple terms – we don’t specify that there must be a one-to-one mapping of concepts on the list to terms in a formal vocabulary, and nor, I think, should we impose such a restriction.

From this standpoint, a suitable definition of “new” is sufficient, and clarification of how the list ought to be used in the introduction to the appendix may be desirable.

Based on this, it would seem to be correct to mark a button to start a new email or online document as either “new” or “compose”. I don’t think that is going to be helpful.

I think that compose sounds like a combination of “new” and “edit”.  What do the existing metadata for purposes (e.g. schema.org) do for this situation?

Per my Action item, I would like to propose the following new definition for the term "New" (and modified definition for the term "Compose"):

  *   New: Create a new item (e.g. an email, online document, etc.)
  *   Compose: Start the process of creating new editorial content by the user (e.g. compose an email, blog post, online document, etc.)

[Jason] Compose: create and start the process of editing a new file or content item (e.g., an email message, forum post, document, spreadsheet or diagram).
