As: * alerts that always have to be dismissed would seriously slow down many high-intensity tasks (like email processing); * but alerts that always disappear will be a problem for some users with cognitive and learning disabilities; * and whatever value is set before auto-disappearance, it will be much too quick for some users; I'm sure that Patrick's proposal that: "the site should provide some global setting for users to disable auto-hiding of alerts, so that the alerts could do the current hiding, but that a user who has problems with this can switch it off"; is the way to resolve these contradictions. The SC, understanding texts and techniques should all be written in a way that both allows and encourages this type of solution. I'm afraid I haven't had an opportunity to see exactly what needs to be/can be done to achieve this. Best regards Mike From: Patrick H. So I'd still maintain that in spirit, this scenario is covered, but agree it should be more explicitly addressed in the understanding document as an example (perhaps as a failure example - the alert appearing and then disappearing, with the suggestion to simply remove the automatic hiding/disappearing and to leave it visible until the user dismises it explicitly with a "Close" or "Got it..." type control; failing that, suggesting that the site should provide some global setting for users to disable auto-hiding of alerts, so that the alerts could do the current hiding, but that a user who has problems with this can switch it off) P -- Patrick H.
