More experimental results...

Again, a 1024x1024 table, with (longish) markup (<ROW>,<COLUMN>)

Before compression
   alltags.xml       27615427
   noendtags.xml     21320895

   End tags add about 29% to the files size.

After compression
   alltags.xml.gz    6010685
   noendtags.xml.gz  5837974

   End tags add about 2% to the file size.
