The IETF proposals for instant messaging include corresponding URI schemes...

   http://www.ietf.org/html.charters/impp-charter.html

e.g. section 5 of:

   http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-impp-cpim-02.txt

Specific protocol proposals may define further URI schemes.
