A problem with permitting 5 to 1 [by +/-1] implying (5,4,3,2,1), is the use case where you may often write 1 to count(fred) to give a set of indices corresponding to each fred, where in the absence of any freds you want an empty sequence, rather than the (1,0) that would result. -- *John Lumley* MA PhD CEng FIEE john@saxonica.com <mailto:john@saxonica.com> on behalf of Saxonica Ltd
