The WG has tried both options (you'll find older drafts that provided a mechanism for foreign namespaced elements to be ignored), and decided, on balance, that it prefers the current mechanism of an explicit p:pipeinfo wrapper. The WG is not motivated to reopen this issue at this time. If you are unsatisfied by this response, please let us know.
