Although there are some use cases that would be simplified by your suggestions, we concluded that there were others that would not. Writing your own pipeline allows you to get precisely the semantics that you need. What's more, adoption of your suggestion for p:validate-with-xml-schema would have required parallel changes in the other validation steps for consistency.
