The model either works by showing that XRD can be thought of as a Profile Document, or that it can point to a Profile Document. In the latter case this is part of the larger idea of WebID, which is that we are proving the identity of an agent. It's something that longer term could be put on a logical foundation with a logic of trust as mentioned by Issue 13 http://www.w3.org/2005/Incubator/webid/track/issues/13 Anyway, just looking into all those issues can take time, which is why it would be good to have specialists in that space help out on it.
