R: OMA White Paper on social networks

Hello Milton,

OMA is an SDO focused on the specification of end-to-end service enablers (including technical specifications & reference architecture) for the mobile world, defining interfaces, components & related procedures for mobile devices as well as for service provider platforms. It gathers nearly 150 actors of the mobile industry worldwide.

Note that the OMA does not address the software development of its specifications, which can be performed by individual companies or through open-source projects, outside the OMA context. You may have heard for example of Funambol [1], which is an open-source implementation of the OMA DM/DS specification.

How is OMA related and positioned vis a vis the Open Handset Alliance and the Eclipse Foundation and other similar initiatives?

Nothing against more broad initiatives, the more the merrier, but my experience in ICT field shows that more initiatives open the potential for more proprietary solutions or competing platforms.

Developers who are interested in open access, open source and open licensing must often make hard choices in how to allocate their development resources.

This is particularly true of software development platforms which are non-profit in nature and which target global market segments of users in developing countries who do not have the usual financial resources of developed country consumers.

As anticipated during my self-presentation [1] I have been working in the OMA [2] together with other companies at a whitepaper dealing with Mobile Social Networking.
