Our thinking here was: traveling costs (money, time, etc.), and the attendance rate might be better if we do it in conjunction with an event many will attend anyway. Of course there are downsides to this approach: we'd meet at the weekend, attendants would have to be away from home even longer than planned, conflict with other IETF things (hackathons, ...), and so on.
