Downsides:

* More DNS queries.
* More effort to deploy a simple one page application.
* Incompatible with existing web application infrastructure.

Unresolved either way:

* Finding the navigation controller for a given URL
* Finding the event worker for a given URL
* Finding the page/window associated with an end-user notification

So other than better sandboxing it would not solve all that much and
potentially be a hindrance for people trying to adapt new features.
