Ok, so the special element would not be part of the DOM? If so, I think that would be a good solution. Could we find a way to word it so that Chrome and Safari both can implement it in whatever way works for you?

I spoke some with a Japanese developer friend and he said he typed into a small window when not using a browser -- but now that I think of it, he is using Mac OS X.
