Hello,

the Process task force of the AB has produced a working draft for a new Process Document, and would like you to review it: https://dvcs.w3.org/hg/AB/raw-file/default/cover.html

There are two substantive changes (as listed in the changes section at the end) from the current operative Process:

* Activities have been removed
This is essentially an administration detail, like Domains (which were never in the Process Document), for organising related Working and/or Interest Groups. There were a very small number of administrative requirements that were transferred from Activities to Working Groups: having a list of them and what their status is at each AC meeting; describing known information about IPR related to the work to be done; giving the date of a first face to face meeting.
The team is welcome to continue using whatever internal structure it wishes, and may continue internally to group things in Activities and give people titles like "Activity Lead", in the same way as they have done for "Domain Lead".

* Rules about Good Standing have been removed
The rules were extremely specific, and assumed a work mode that is not the case for many modern Working Groups. In addition they are rarely used. The process continues to allow charters to contain provisions beyond the default, so it is possible to add Good Standing rules to any charter, but there is not a default set of rules that may be applied unexpectedly.

The upshot is a 10% shorter document than our current operative process. Other than God Standing rules no longer being automatically available to be exercised by a chair, there should be no practical impact on work.

Your review to *check* that is the case will be appreciated. The Process Task Force expects to continue working on the document, with a goal of adopting a new version next year.

The document also notes ISSUE-129, which proposes to remove coordination groups as a special type of group. You may wish to comment on, or ask questions about, that proposal.

The task force works in public, using the infrastructure of the W3C Process Community Group - http://w3.org/community/w3process - and comments should be sent to the public mailing list public-w3-process@w3.org by preference of the Task Force.

However comments raised here, or sent to the AB, will be tracked, and your anonymity maintained, should you prefer to work that way.

Note that the document has not been renumbered yet. Detailed changelogs are available at https://dvcs.w3.org/hg/AB/ and a list of issues is available at https://www.w3.org/community/w3process/track/ which is editable by members of the Community Group.

cheers

Chaals
(As editor, for the task force)
