[HEADs UP: VC-EDU] Context for upcoming convo on SBT / VC / DID (Monday June 27th, 2022 11am EDT)

Dear VC EDers, 

Wanted to getting us warmed up for the exciting convo we will host next Monday Jan.27th (same time, same place).

It’s going to be about newly observed phenomena in the Internet space and exploring them further with new friends - to stay true to our EDU “family name", this will be a learning experience.

Our work on Open Standards to solve for technical interoperability is the tip of the iceberg, however there is a fundamental layer0 that connects all of us in this community:  embracing complexity by leaning into diversity to achieve better (ecosystem) coordination.
Coordination, leading to consensus, is certainly a major issue in making and adopting standards for the Web.

Back in May, the seminal publication on Decentralized Society (DeSoc) <https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4105763> theorised a new star in the Identity and Credentials cosmos: SoulBound Tokens (SBT).  
Since then we have seen a Cambrian explosion of reactions and reflections on the relationship between SBT and VC/DIDs. (These <https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zn0IqMycuUwIbajnb4Y8Wafw0Ov3dIWEQuW55pu1XIo/edit?usp=sharing> are just a few resources which will curate further in GitHub)

We would like to create a space for this conversation around Soulbound NFTs & VCs/DIDs within W3C.  
In mid April (before the DeSoc paper)  the W3C CCG hosted a first chat on NFT and Identity <https://w3c-ccg.github.io/meetings/2022-04-12/>, setting off with the hypothesis that “NFTs are good for VCs and DIDs <https://twitter.com/psykoreactor/status/1513888579986075652?s=20&t=Knlhcma5lC6b9A4y2j-vig>”. It feels the timing is right for pursuing that discourse. 

The approach we like is to: establish common ground, lean into the frictions points, use high-doses of “humble intelligence”.

The focus we would like to keep is on Education Use Cases and practical examples from the members in our community that are experimenting.

The desirable outcome is to use this time together to do research, learn and discuss - this is a pursuit that won’t be achieved in 45 mins on Monday, but a conversation that we intend to continue hosting.

We have a formidable opportunity to build a new Golden Gate toward the future of the internet for everyone to safely continue the journey, bridging both shores (web2 and web3) with affordable hints on what (primitives) to use when, leveraging diversity with a purpose.

Look for the usual agenda (this weekend) where we will announce the friendly guests who will animate the conversation - did not want to spoiler that line-up yet 😜
