From: Alan Lambshead [mailto:alan.lambshead@gmail.com] On Behalf Of Alan Lambshead Sent: Monday, June 02, 2014 8:03 PM To: Michael A Dolan Cc: plh@w3.org; liaisons@lists.smpte.org Subject: SMPTE Liaison to W3C re SMPTE-TT Dear Michael, As previously reported in [1], SMPTE is developing standards for the Interoperable Master Format (IMF). The first iteration of IMF (see SMPTE ST 2067-2) uses SMPTE ST 2052-1 (SMPTE-TT) for subtitle and captions delivery across broadcast and Internet channels. Based on user input and implementation feedback, the 35PM Technical Committee of SMPTE, tasked with IMF, believes that: - specifying a practical set of constraints against SMPTE-TT would improve interoperability; - it would be preferable if such constraints were based on an existing profile of SMPTE-TT, leveraging existing implementations and content; and - the IMSC profile of TTML, as embodied in the recently published FPWD [2], is the lead candidate for such a practical set of constraints. In particular, 35PM noted that IMSC is based on the CFF-TT profile, which is a profile of SMPTE-TT and is already in use in the IMF user community. SMPTE looks forward to the completion of the IMSC work, and working with W3C.
