The general problem of assigning each character a position in handwritten scripts is kind of meaningless. E.g. in Arabic, should we use Kashida to make the text flow from one character to the next? I wish I was around when this feature was being introduced, so I could have argued that authors should do their own counting by putting each character inside its own `<text>`.
