Re: What's the current state of Solid?

Hi,

I can only give some solid answers about projects where we are involved.
Feel free to ask if you would like more details about these projects.

*Datakluis/jouw.id [funded, running]*
This is a project of five media-companies, covering about 95% (?) of the
market. They are aiming on two goals in the first phases:
- Enable SSO in the Dutch media, so people only have one username/password
- Give people the ability to give their preferences and share them with
different entities. Preference are stored in the Solid POD. They are
managed by the user. This enhances the media-experience as users have
more control.
Challenges in the project (mostly solved):
- Use (pseudo) id's to make sure that different media companies do not
get access to data from other companies.
- Have a secure calculation which brings together the algorithm, content
and the user data and creates the content for the user (thanks to
Datavillage)
We think this is an awesome project, giving back data and control to the
user. Goal is to go to production in 2025. Most source will be closed at
first, but ultimate goal is to release as much as possible as open source.

*Libraries/Balanced choices [funded, running]*
Partially funded project from Royal Library, Public Library Amsterdam,
Waag, Bookarang, University of Amsterdam and Muze. The goal is to create
a POD for users where they can store their books. The books should/could
be synced with their lending history. They can manage the list
themselves, give additional preferences what genres they like to read
and then a recommender will give a list of books they might like.
Interviews are being done by users, we are looking for ISBN data and the
project has started.
Goal is to create a working POC, which should be integrated in library
systems, but also able to run on a mobile phone. Release target 2025.
When successful could be release to other libraries and enhance for more
culture wide tips, agenda. Oh the plans we have...

*Nextcloud/PHP Solid server phase 3 [funded by NLNET, running]*
We will release additional Nextcloud modules and a PHP Solid server. PHP
has a longer security lifetime which should simplify our life. Nextcloud
is influx itself and therefore requires more updates than we would
prefer. In the project are also included to enhance the test-suite
again, create benchmarking software and change the default URL mode from
tld/~name to name.tld as that is more in line with the security model of
the web.

*Databinding between HTML and RDF*
We are crating tooling for databinding between HTML and RDFstore, making
it easier and faster to create (web) applications in Solid. This is a
project we are building under SimplyEdit. Part of the toolset we think
is needed to build applications faster.

*Projects where we are applying to funding or would like funding:
*- Data commons energy project with multiple parties. Data being read
with P1 measure instruments. Stored in Solid PODS, shared with community
and the supply and demand from the community is being shared back to the
individual (pods). Depending on supply and demand, users/houses can
decide to charge their car, do the laundry, heat the house, charge the
batter, uncharge their batteries or stop solar panels in case of
oversupply. This will impact the (regional) communities. It fits in a
broader theme of data commons. We are in the final process of applying
to funding for this project.
- We would like to create a server independent dashboard where you can
have applications and documents easy to start. The dashboard should be
customizable with applications. Interested? Delivering funding? Contact us.
- We are in contact with the VODAN project who are interested in Solid
pods for healthcare in the global south
- PDS migrator needs another push, anybody have some funding available?
- So many ideas, so little time and often real funding is a big issue.

*External projects where we are not involved, but still very interesting*
- There are _a lot of projects_ in Flaanders, Belgium
- Linckr is build on Solid - https://www.linckr.com/

We are building stuff in and with Solid, servers, applications. If you
want to have something build, drop us a line.

Kind regards,
Sjoerd
