RE: Joining the GeoJSON discussion

As some of you know I've been interacting with the GeoJSON group for more than a year. They have been quite a tight knit team until now, and sometimes resistant to influences from outside the group-of-six. For example, Jeff Yutzler and Erik Wilde have been valiantly trying to raise the issue of predictable extension points, including higher-dimensional geometries, for a while, but not convincing some of the original developers https://github.com/geojson/draft-geojson/issues/98 

An article of faith to the core group is that GeoJSON is out there, in fairly widespread use, and nothing should be done to jeopardize that. In particular, there should be no changes to the "format" (their language) that would make any existing GeoJSON data invalid. The particular focus is on existing tool support. That is an understandable position. It is also a strong constraint. 

So it is very interesting that Martin is chairing the IETF project (with Erik as vice chair I understand) - neither being from the original team. Appears that GeoJSON has moved to a more inclusive governance model. (They always had an open record of discussions and decisions, but a limited group with 'voting rights' and no clear mechanism for joining that group.)

At lunch today, Kerry and I talked to Martin Thomson from Mozilla (in cc). Martin is chair of the "Geographic JSON (geojson)" IETF WG [1] and would be happy to hear our comments and get input on the future development of GeoJSON. We talked particularly about the use of (default) CRSs and about the use of GeoJSON in a linked data context. Our take on the first one was "don't use it without an explicit CRS", regarding the latter, Martin said that geojson-ld [2] is not (yet) part of the charter, but that if there is enough demand, that might be changed.

There is no formal process for joining an IETF WG. The WG consists of the people taking part in the discussion; that is done by joining the mailing list and anyone can do that.

I think that covers the discussion we had so far.
