FWIW I would object to the change in Comment 12 for exactly the reason given in
Comment 13; it makes the API more developer hostile but has few practical
advantages. I also agree that the change suggested in Comment 0 is dangerous,
but since there are people who seem to think that this consistency is important
I hope they will do the work to discover the compatibility constraints.
