Christian: if the definition of a dialect is something that extends the core then RIF Core <> RIF dialect. If on the other hand RIF Core is just another name for RIF Horn, then it is a dialect. Paul Vincent TIBCO - ETG/Business Rules -----Original Message----- From: public-rif-wg-request@w3.org [mailto:public-rif-wg-request@w3.org] On Behalf Of Christian de Sainte Marie Sent: 19 December 2006 13:53 To: RIF WG Subject: [TED] Is RIF Core a RIF dialect? All, Among the several questions raised in the on-going discussion started by Gary's email on recursion and production rules, there is a basic one on which I wonder if we all agree: - Is RIF Core a RIF dialect or not? My understanding was that RIF Core was a dialect like any other RIF dialect; in that view RIF Core is actually a subset of all other RIF dialects (*). It seems that for Michael, at least, RIF Core is not a RIF dialect, but something different. Comments? (*) Notwithstanding the pending discussion on defining dialects by restriction as well as extension, which we should have as well, but in connection with a discussion (that we will have at some point) on forward/backward compatibility rather than conformance, I think.
