I've just come across this article on A List Apart which discusses
methods to "increase the semantic capacity of HTML" in HTML5 which may
be relevant:


It discusses Microformats a lot, and how HTML5 could be extended to
resolve some of the issues that Microformats has run into (abbr
pattern etc.), but doesn't mention RDFa at all.
