In my experience, '-' is far more commonly used within SQL
identifiers than '.', and thus likely to cause more confusion,
even if both do require escaping. '.' is consistently used as
a separator; this is just a different kind of separation.
So, my preference is for '.' ... and I expect to be on the call.
