The issue was that the wording seems to indicate that the typed value of this case was not defined in the data model and thus we error. With the clarification that the value is not defined and therefore dm:typed-value() in the data model raises the error which then is surfaced by fn:data(), my issue is addressed. The typed value of an element node of complex type with element-only content is undefined. An attempt to extract this typed value by using the fn:data function raises type error XP0007, as noted in the XQuery document. No changes to the document are needed.
